So, in September, after I'd said that Basildon Park had told me, “There are plans to do something for the anniversary. There is also an item going out about Ruth Mott in the next edition of the National Trust magazine including one of her recipes. Many thanks,” I was delighted when my Autumn/Winter Newsletter arrived; then immediately disappointed, as no such event/article appears.
A quick message to Basildon Park eventually received a reply, saying, “Hello, sorry for the confusion it will be the Spring edition, we work a little ahead of the publications so the winter one won't feature Ruth Mott. Many thanks.”
I messaged back, expressing regret at them probably missing Ruth’s centenary year as a result. After a couple more days, they replied with:
“We have just launched our new representation of the house for Autumn called 'Dinner at 8' which is based upon the lliffe's love of throwing parties and Ruth's recipes and ability to rustle up a meal for a large party at short notice are featured as a large part of the story. In the 50's kitchen will be producing some of Ruth's canapes and talking about her recipes. There is more information here and here. Many thanks.”
Now, they’d been trailing the ‘Dinner at 8’ thing for quite some time before but this is the first (and only?) mention of it that I’d seen involving the kitchen and Ruth, specifically.
It’s a pity if they miss actually marking Ruth’s centenary year. However, anything they do will be preferable to overlooking the occasion altogether. Trip to Basildon Park, anyone?
